The main purpose of this article is to provide a translation of homily 27, one of the jewels among the homilies of Proclus of Constantinople, since a translation of this sermon was not included in my recently published translation of his homilies (see note 6 below). Preceding the translation are a few remarks on the homily's dramatic, confessional and ethical nature: homilies of the patristic and Byzantine period were often presented in a dramatized style, while the nature of the homily as baptismal sermon naturally entails confessional and theological material on the one hand and ethical imperatives directed at the newly baptized on the other hand. |
