Popis: | A new video scrambling technique provides controlled picture degradation. The scrambling is performed prior to MPEG encoding, with only a minimal increase in the MPEG transport stream bit rate. The technique uses point operations on blocks of pixels. Digitally encrypted scrambling parameters are transmitted to the decoder by embedding them into the scrambled picture so that the data also goes through the MPEG encode/decode cycles. The data channel capability of the system arises due to the scrambling process and is otherwise not available. The degradation level of the displayed video is controlled by the service operator and may be changed arbitrarily at any time. Scrambling is totally independent of the MPEG level and profile, frame frequency, and the particular sampling scheme (i.e., 4.2:0, etc.). The technique is applicable to all MPEG-2-based broadcast schemes including ATSC and DVB-S/C/T. Extensive simulations were performed to test and verify the technique which permits sufficient variation of the algorithm and parameters to allow customization by the adopting operator, and makes unauthorized decoding nearly impossible. |
