This article describes our adaptation of narrative methods for instructional use in undergraduate human services internship seminars. We created an activity called the Reflecting Pool as a forum to promote professional identity development by inviting students to share sparkling moments, connect with multiple outsider witnesses, and trace the evolution of their identities through time. Results suggested that students responded to the Reflecting Pool with a heightened experience of professional identity development. Furthermore, through the collaborative process, we (the authors) began to examine our own practices and our assumptions about the work we do. |
