Hemoglobin G Waimanalo was found in Hawaii, in 1971, in a male subject of Filipino ancestry being examined for mild microcytic hypochromic anemia. Analyses now indicate that this slow variant has its structural change at the α-64 or αE13 position where an asparaginyl residue replaces the aspartyl residue normally found at that location. Relative amounts of Hemoglobins A0 and G Waimanalo in the hemolysate mixture from the initial subject's blood were found to be 81:19 by spectrophotometric measurement of fractions separated by column chromatography. Similar ratios were found in several relatives. |
