A sequential contraceptive, mestranol-chlormadinone acetate, was studied in clinics at the Jacksonville (Florida) Health Department from August, 1965, to November, 1967. Investigation revealed the interval between the last tablet and the onset of menses was longer with the sequential than the combined type “pill.” It is hypothesized that the poorer “safety record” of the sequential type contraceptive may be due to a pituitary escape phenomenon. Early results of an altered dose schedule tend to support this hypothesis since, in approximately 1,000 woman-years on each schedule, the pregnancy rates significantly differed. |
