Chapter 6 by Dominika Biegon examines legitimation narratives on the capitalist market economy in the quality press. Biegon suggests that narratives help discourse participants to reduce complexity and to integrate legitimation ideas into a coherent and stable whole. Her interpretive analysis confirms that narratives are an important resource of the capitalist market economy’s supporters, who stabilize the regime and its legitimation by successfully keeping a number of convincing pro-capitalist story lines in the public eye. The dominant wealth and freedom narratives on the merits of the capitalist market economy have emerged unscathed from the 2008 financial crisis; no substantially new pro-capitalist narrative – which might have supported calls for at least some institutional change – has gained prominence. |
