Popis: Many supply side determinants of womens health exist. Lack of physical infrastructure is the leading barrier for poor women in developing countries for gaining access to health services. Maternal and child health services provide most womens health services yet womens health problems originate from inaccessible health care in infancy childhood as well as adolescence. Womens health needs should not be confined to their physical health but should also include mental health. The health services which do exist tend to be located far from the clients they serve. Mobile services or home-based care address the distance barrier. Inefficient use of health personnel within the system their meager numbers and their inequitable distribution all affect their availability. The global economic crisis has exasperated multiple inequities including cutbacks in the public health sector which adversely affects poor women who cannot afford to seek health care in the private sector. The time costs of traveling to waiting for and receiving health services also prevent women from seeking health care. Health care planners must consider womens perceptions of health care provide competent and complete health care and a well-equipped infrastructure to provide appropriate quality health care. Informational barriers range from not knowing where to go to obtain health care to not knowing the danger signs or seriousness of a condition. Insufficient knowledge is tied to women;s low self-esteem. Decision making dynamics (decision makers can be the woman herself her husband the village elder and/or other family or community members) can also be an obstacle to health care. Cultural preferences and beliefs can prevent women from seeking health care (e.g. in some parts of Africa delivery without help equals courage). Womens issues specialists have listed policy research and program recommendations in this chapter for each determinant.
