We wished to compare the low vision patients seen in the Appalachian Center for Vision Rehabilitation with those identified in previous statewide survey to determine if those who access low vision treatment are different than those who do not access treatment. We compared the two groups in four specific areas: demographics, treatment pattern, expectations of vision, and activities of daily living. We conducted a telephone survey of two samples, one of 417 patients seen in the clinic and one of 1026 randomly selected households in WV. Based on a stated difficulty in reading, ordinary newsprint 330 of the clinical group and 107 of the random sample were identified as having low vision. Income levels between the two samples appear to be similar with the majority earning less than $20,000. Statistically significant differences were found in the patients' vision health ratings (p = 0.002).
