With every substrate the optimal pH forA. diazotrophicus was lower than forA. vinelandii. The optimal hydrogen ion concentration forA. diazotrophicus was 5 fold to 365 fold greater than forA. vinelandii depending upon the substrate. In general,A. diazotrophicus supports respiration over a wider pH range than doesA. vinelandii.
