Objectives – To compare the levels of serum ferritin & serum ceruloplasmin in pregnant & non- pregnant women & to nd out whether any correlation exists between ferritin & ceruloplasmin levels in pregnancy. Methods –Case population comprised of pregnant women coming for routine antenatal visit in OPD, Nil Ratan Sirkar Medical College & Hospital rd in their 3 trimester of pregnancy. Patient of pre-existing iron deciency anaemia, pregnancy induced hypertension, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, hemoglobinopathies like sickle cell anaemia, thalassemia, were excluded from our study. A control group of healthy, non-pregnant subjects was used for comparison. Results – Serum ferritin level was found to be lower in pregnancy than in non-pregnant women. However the decrease was not found to be statistically signicant. Serum ceruloplasmin was found to be higher in pregnant than in non pregnant women & this increase was found to be statistically signicant. Statistically signicant negative correlation was also been found between serum ferritin & serum ceruloplasmin. Conclusion - Our study establishes the fact that there is increase in serum ceruloplasmin concentration in pregnancy & this increase is further accelerated in iron decient state designated by decreased serum ferritin concentration. |
