Infection is common in the general population and in football athletes. In regard to the immune system and susceptibility to infection, the elite athlete is in an interesting juxtaposition of the positive effects of exercise versus over-expenditure of energy. The in-season American football player is usually participating in over 3 h of exercise each day with limited recovery time. The goal of in-season infectious disease management is to keep the player safe, while minimizing symptom severity and time away from sport. Infectious diseases related to the upper respiratory system, lower respiratory system, dermatologic infections, and other common infections will be discussed. |
