Popis: | These three books offer widely differing views on the state of academic freedom in America's universities views held within the academic community, by scholars who have seriously reflected on the issue. In this sense, Doumani, and most of his contributors represent the views of the 'Left' that is, they see academic freedom threatened by malign forces in American society. They see the greatest danger as coming from a fringe group of right-wing 'think tanks', dedicated to intimidating academics and making them kowtow to government. So far, the universities have eluded the conservatives' 'march through the institutions', and are therefore a special target. Conservatives, according to this view, fear that their mission will be incomplete unless and until they gain the upper hand in the universities. Downs, in contrast, approaches the problem from a 'CentreRight' perspective. He sees academic freedom endangered by forces within the academy itself. In particular, he believes a form of 'therapeutic progressivism' is responsible for the numerous speech codes, edicts of political correctness, and stifling orthodoxies that have plagued American universities. Downs is not to be confused with the more extreme 'Right' perspective of David Horowitz |
