This case presents the challenges facing organizations within the sharing economy as they struggle to become more socially inclusive. After describing corporate social responsibility (CSR), specifically social equity, a case study of Airbnb is provided. Using Caroll’s (1991) pyramid of CSR adoption, it is argued that Airbnb remains in-between the economic and legal responsibility platforms, where the CSR initiatives are driven by increased competition in the accommodation sector and legal sanctions placed on the company through discrimination lawsuits. |
