Towards an operational method of estimating rainfall over west Africa using Meteosat IR images

Popis: Hourly Meteosat IR “image windows” and daily rainfall amounts over the Sahel for a one month period from 10 June to 9 July 1986 were used. Cloud clusters, some of which were associated with squall lines, have been tracked through successive images. A cloud index proportional to the volume of the cloud is derived at each step and is compared to the hourly Precipitation Index determined from the daily rainfall amounts. A good estimation of rainfall for some individual clouds is obtained, but each event must be calibrated with ground measurements.
