Thermodynamic analysis of an external action on the kinetics of bulk solidification of metals

Popis: | A mathematical model is developed for the bulk solidification kinetics of a metal during its vibrational treatment using nonequilibrium thermodynamics. The model corresponds to the well-known Kolmogorov-Mirkin kinetic equation for isothermal crystal growth. The novelty of the model consists in the determination of the dependence of the volume of the precipitating solid phase on the temperature parameters of solidification and the external action intensity. According to the model calculations, the metastability period of the melt at the beginning of solidification decreases sharply. This fact is explained by the influence of the external energy on the formation of a large number of solid-phase centers from melt clusters, which are unstable during conventional solidification. The external action parameters at which the process of vibrational treatment of a metal is efficient are determined from an analysis of the relation between the rates of nonequilibrium and conventional solidification. |
