Popis: The effects on the corrosion of wire rope for mining applications of the breakdown products of reactions between organic fibre materials and lubricants, with and without contaminants, have been studied. Oxidation of pyritic mine dusts in the presence of corrosion debris to form acidic products is also discussed, and the effectiveness of certain inhibitors is assessed. It has been observed that decomposition of fibre core material contaminated with commercial lubricants and the interaction of the impure layer of corrosion products with mine dusts combine to accelerate the corrosion of wire ropes inside mines. Decomposition of the organic manila fibre appears to form acidic reaction products in the presence of certain contaminants, such as lubricants: commercial manila fibre decomposes to form alkaline products in the absence of contaminants. Corrosion debris appears to promote the oxidation of pyritic mine dusts to form acidic products. Benzylamine in low concentrations was found to be a good inhib...
