Driving is a complex task where lack of attention and distraction can lead to accidents and near-crash incidences. Smartphone usage (e.g., calling, texting, navigation, etc.) while driving is one of the major contributors of distraction. Currently, the number of Mobile Application-Based Taxi Services (MABTS) is increasing rapidly in India. The drivers of MABTS are very much dependent on their mobile phone for navigation and other purposes. Proper guidelines for usage of mobile phones for navigation purpose are missing and need to be formulated. Due importance has not been paid in this field of research in developing countries like India. From the literature review, it is evident that both subjective and objective evaluations of driver distraction caused by mobile phone usage have not been carried out in Indian scenario. A total of 107 male taxi drivers driving for MABTS in and around Guwahati city participated in the present study. Standardized questionnaire was administered to evaluate the ease/difficulty of performing various secondary tasks in relation to driving and the preferred position of keeping mobile phone for navigation and related purposes. Result demonstrated that majority of the participants (47.7%) used to place the mobile phone on the dashboard at the left side of driving wheel. About 98.1% participants reported the use of mobile for navigation purpose and 89.7% for calling while driving. The participants mentioned that they do not have any instruction from the service provider regarding placement of mobile devices for navigation purpose and they keep it as per their convenience. |
