The influence of mesh refinement has been studied for computations of passive earth pressure failure in a cohesion-softening soil. Results from finite element analyses using fixed uniform meshes indicate that a converged load-displacement response is possible, even when using a standard continuum; however, to achieve this, small elements are required. A description is then given of an adaptive mesh refinement algorithm; this is based on re-meshing during loading, so that small elements are placed only where needed (i.e. in regions of strain localization). Results using this algorithm show that convergence can be achieved more efficiently. The importance of increment size for strain-softening problems is also demonstrated. |
