Popis: WHEREAS the bovine animal is highly susceptible (Schultze et al., 1959) to the toxic effects of S-(1,2-dichlorovinyl)- l -cysteine (DCVC) (McKinney et al., 1957), several other species such as rats (Schultze et al., 1962), rabbits,2 and chickens,2 are quite resistant. In contrast to the bovine, these species do not develop aplastic anemia when treated with DCVC. After the discovery of an enzyme, DCVC-lyase, in bovine liver and kidney which cleaves DCVC with the formation of pyruvate, chloride, ammonia and an unknown fragment (Anderson and Schultze, 1965), a search was made for this enzymatic activity in some other tissues and organs. Using the formation of pyruvate as a criterion of DCVC cleavage it was found2 that liver and kidneys of turkeys have considerably higher activity than the corresponding bovine tissues. Moreover, when these tissues from both species were used as a source of DCVC-lyase, a positive 4-(p-nitrobenzyl)-pyridine test (Epstein et al., 1955) for . . .
