Popis: Neurogenic (pituitary) Diabetes insipidus is a syndrome caused by inadequate production of antidiuretic hormone, arginine vasopressin (AVP). It is characterized by excretion of abnormally large amounts of dilute urine (polyuria), thirst and increased fluid intake (polydipsia). It can be caused by a variety of acquired diseases or genetic mutations but often occurs without apparent cause. It must be differentiated from diabetes mellitus and other types of DI (nephrogenic, gestational and primary polydipsia) which have fundamentally different causes and must be treated differently. The treatment of choice for pituitary DI is desmopressin, an analogue of AVP. This article describes briefly the normal control and actions of AVP as well as the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of neurogenic DI.
