In recent years, there has been a marked growth in the availability of mobile applications that enable users to monitor and regulate their smartphone use. Examples include those provided at the operating system level — iOS Screentime and Android Digital Wellbeing— as well as stand-alone applications such as Moment and RescueTime among others. While studies in other domains have generated much knowledge about the user characteristics, motivations, and features that predict use, as well as the outcomes of use, in the context of media use, little research has been conducted to understand the factors that motivate the continued use of digital-wellbeing applications. Building on phase one of the project (a quantitative survey), study two involves a qualitative interview methodology to further investigate students' experiences of digital wellbeing. |
