Popis: THE contrasting results of experiments by two different groups of investigators indicate the instability of pure gossypol in mixed diets. Boatner and co-workers (1948) reported that pure gossypol did not greatly retard the growth of young chickens when it was mixed in their diet, but Lillie and Bird (1950) found little difference in the toxicity of pure gossypol and pigment glands when both were administered to young chickens by capsule at equivalent levels of gossypol. Therefore, in the experiment of Heywang, Bird and Altschul (1950) on the effect of gossypol on egg hatchability and weight, the diets with which pure gossypol was mixed were fed only on the day of mixing and the following day. In that experiment, gossypol had an appreciable adverse effect on egg hatchability and weight when it was mixed with the diet at the .024 percent level and a still greater adverse effect at the .036 . . .
