Molecular Beam Epitaxy
Popis: In this chapter I summarise a history of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). I begin by discussing the origins of the method, including the early work of Joyce at Plessey, Arthur and Cho at Bell Labs and our later work at Philips, where reflection high energy diffraction oscillations were observed for the first time. Other important early contributions from researchers in Europe, Japan and the USA are also discussed briefly. I then discuss controlled n and p‐type doping followed by a discussion of modified growth methods. I then discuss low‐dimensional structures, which was one of the reasons for the development of MBE. Finally, I discuss the different materials systems which have been studied by MBE, including III–Vs, II–VIs, IV–VIs and SiGe. Finally, I mention devices which are discussed elsewhere in this book in more detail.
