Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved cellular process that functions in the degradation and recycling of damaged cellular components in response to cell stress. Autophagy plays context-dependent roles in tumorigenesis. Multiple anti-cancer therapies can lead to activation of autophagy within the tumor including chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This chapter will review the mechanisms by which these treatments activate autophagy, available drugs which can be used to modulate autophagy, and how modulation of autophagy can aid in overcoming resistance to treatments commonly used in patients with head and neck cancer. |
