REHABILITATING an old house rather than build-ing a new one is stirring new interest today. The glamour of new construction that once led to the destruc-tion of many older homes has been met by a groundswell to save the old. Because of the major benefits in con-serving our timber resource and the potential of improved housing at reasonable costs, the Forest Products Labora-tory has provided guidelines for evaluating buildings, planning improvements, and accomplishing rehabilitation. Recent projects have shown the current practicality of rehabilitation. Examples of projects and costs involved are presented to illustrate the potential that exists. The information here should emphasize the appeal of rehabilitation in improving housing. Several publica-tions are listed that can be helpful in planning educa-tional programs. |
