Life expectancy following spinal cord injury (SCI) has increased dramatically, and individuals with SCI are participating in their communities in later life. It is important for individuals with SCI and clinicians to understand how the body ages with a SCI, particularly because they may not manifest typical signs and symptoms of the various health conditions for which they are at risk. A complimentary approach of patient self-management and clinician-led treatment is important to managing the primary and secondary health conditions associated with SCI. The presence of psychological dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, and comorbid acquired brain injury is higher in SCI patients as compared to healthy controls, and proper management of these conditions is important to functional outcome. Functional decline with aging is inevitable but not everyone with SCI ages in the same way or the same rate. Health (body structures and function) and daily function (activities and participation) are reliant on a dynamic interaction between health conditions, environmental factors, and personal factors. Physical activity and social connectedness in later life contribute to overall enhanced physical, cognitive, psychological, and social well-being. Clinicians are encouraged to work with clients to eliminate barriers to community participation and implement more preventative treatments that promote long-term planning for the prevention of secondary complications associated with aging and SCI. |
