This paper presents a short review of a program in progress at A.R.A.P. which is aimed at increasing our understanding of the decay of the trailing vortex systems behind aircraft. Although a number of mechanisms have been identified by which a vortex system may be dissipated, i.e., by shear, by the growth of disturbances due to mutual interference, and by vortex breakdown, we have confined ourselves in developing the present program to a study of the effect of turbulent shear on the decay of a single vortex. The ultimate aim of the program is the development of a method by which the effects of turbulence, whether introduced initially in the center of a vortex or contained in the fluid in which the vortex is formed, could be calculated. |
