Resonant power supply for barrier discharge UV-excimer sources

Popis: It is shown that the selection of a resonant converter topology for the power stage of a new switch mode power supply constructed to drive an ultraviolet-excimer gas discharge lamp matches the highly capacitive load characteristics of this lamp and delivers the needed inductive load compensation. It leads to a converter design that promises highly efficient operation of the overall system together with a high power density of the power supply. This is because the reduction of switching losses achievable with this resonant concept allows switching frequencies in the range of several hundred kilohertz. Results for a mathematical model describing the steady-state operation of the system are presented and compared to PSPICE simulation. The operation of the system has been demonstrated with prototype converters delivering 2.2 kW nominal output power and a power density of about 55 W/in/sup 3/. >
