Popis: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses capillary basement membrane thickness in early diabetes. In an experiment described in the chapter, 12 potential diabetics, 34 diabetics, and 12 normal controls were studied. The control group consisted of 12 nondiabetic subjects who had normal responses to oral glucose and no family history of diabetes. The results of the nested analysis of variance of capillary basement membrane measurements obtained in potential diabetics, controls, and diabetics of recent onset are illustrated in the chapter. There is no significant increase in mean muscular capillary basement membrane thickness in potential diabetics or diabetics of recent onset as compared to nondiabetic control subjects. There are wide variations in the capillary basement membrane width in different sections of the same capillary, in different capillaries of any given subject, and between subjects of the same group. Considering the lack of difference observed in the capillary basement membrane width of normal controls compared to potential diabetics and diabetics of recent onset, the working hypothesis has been that basement membrane thickness is similar in all three groups.
