Popis: A new detection method is presented for detecting the weak optical signal scattered back from a topographic target. The weak signal arriving from a topographic target is amplified by the frequency modulated transmitter laser of the lidar system and the amplified signal is mixed with the frequency shifted transmitter laser beam. The concept is used for a differential absorption lidar and excellent common mode rejection has been achieved. Field applications of the system are presented.
