The response of mechanical and electrical systems usually differs considerably from the time pattern of the exciting force or voltage, particularly if this time pattern is nonsinusoidal. Mechanical systems do not act like generators that are switched on and off; their steady-state vibrations are attained gradually, and they die out gradually when the excitation stops. The variation of the response of the system from that of the driving force or voltage is usually described as its transient response. As a consequence of their transients, mechanical and electrical systems are not just reproducers, they exhibit their own idiosyncracies. |
