This chapter discusses the “English in India” refers to the sociolinguistic aspects – the history, policies, functions, status, attitudes of the language in India, while “Indian English” refers to how English is used by Indians. It focuses on recent developments relating to English in India in both aspects. The chapter argues that English in India has to be viewed from the multilingual communication matrix of India rather than in comparison with native varieties of English. It aims to outline the multilingual ecology as the context and frame of reference for how English operates in India. The chapter also discusses the uses or sociolinguistic functions of English in India and explores the salient characteristics of the community of users of English in India. English pervades the Indian educational system, especially at higher levels, and increasingly in the early stages and in both government and private schools. |
