A strain of pea seed-borne mosaic virus isolated from the field pea cultivar ‘Pamaro’ and designated PSbMV-Pam was unable to infect pea cultivars homozygous for the mo gene which confers resistance to bean yellow mosaic virus. PSbMV-Pam was efficiently transmitted by Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer), but poorly by Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach). Using an international set of Pisum sativum L. differential hosts, PSbMV-Pam was shown to resemble both a Dutch isolate and a lentil strain of PSbMV from the United States, but, in most instances, produced milder symptoms. PSbMV-Pam could be distinguished from an isolate from the pea cultivar ‘Small Sieve Freezer’ by means of direct ELISA but not by indirect assay. |
