Popis: In recent years a number of social workers have been hired by business and industry. The social work profession has taken a great interest in this phenomenon, hailing it in recent articles as a new and promising field of practice. This article looks at early social work in industry, from its beginning in the late 1800s until its demise in the late 1920s, and finds that, far from being a new field of practice, it was one of the earliest specializations. The article analyzes reasons for its growth and decline and discusses implications for the current development of industrial social work.
