Popis: | This chapter explores the classification and use of plants as crude drugs based on folklore and traditional medicine; these crude drugs have been the foundation and template for the isolation and synthesis of therapeutic agents for a plethora of ailments. As a result, they have been incorporated in the various alternative medical systems and a significant number have been examined through evidence-based scientific research. Earth’s flora holds an untapped reservoir of plants that may possess medicinal and agricultural properties for new discoveries. These plants can then be one source of crude drugs, and may be classified by various methods within pharmacopoeial definitions. The collection and storage of the plant material play an important role in the quality of the crude drug that will be produced and the preserved specimen placed in a herbarium acts as a reference tool. Extraction of plant crude drugs has evolved significantly as technology has enhanced the isolation of new compounds with therapeutic value. |
