Pharmaceuticals used in the prevention and treatment of the most diverse diseases enter the environment from different sources, mainly through the effluents from wastewater treatment plants. Regardless of the source, the final receiver is the marine environment. Although the dilution factor of the sea is greater than in freshwater environments, it is necessary to investigate the levels of occurrence of these pollutants as well as their possible harmful effects on marine organisms. In this sense, it is necessary to use suitable pollution indicators. Seawater, sediments, and marine biota stand out as the main indicators used to determine the concentration levels of pharmaceuticals in marine environments. The values found in different studies around the world are in the range of |
