The magnetism of vanadocene, V(C5H5)2, was studied between 1.02 and 312 K. Above ∼15 K, the Curie-Weiss law is obeyed (θ-9.0 K, μeff 3.78 BM at 297.3 K). A transition to long- range (antiferromagnetic) order is observed at TN = 8.3 K. The results are rationalized in terms of a linear chain Ising model (J/k —1.3 K, g = 2.0) with added interchain interaction (J′/k —0.05 K, z = 4). A reasonable fit is also achieved on the basis of the pair model (J/k —2.3 K, g = 2.0). The conclusions are supported by the finding of a heat capacity anomaly at 7.5 K. |
