The hypothesis according to which airborne pollutants present in urban areas could be among the causes accounting for the increased number of cases of lung cancer and chronic bronchopneumopathy in populations residing in such areas has been suggested (Cuyler Hammond and Garfinkel, 1980; Doll, 1978; Vena, 1982). Indeed, a great quantity of mineral particles is present in urban aerosols and, because of their structure many of them are able of absorbing and carrying carci nogenic and biologically active substances. (Paoletti et al., 1989). |
