Popis: Studies on the biaxial compressive strength of alumina showed that the compressive failure was insensitive to the presence of the secondary compressive stress except possibly close to the equi-biaxial compressive state. It was found in another study that, in contrast to alumina and siliconized silicon carbide, the compressive failure of silicon nitride is not induced by the growth of cracks from Griffith flaws. Tests were conducted to discover whether the compressive biaxial strength of silicon nitride had a behavior in biaxial compression similar to that of alumina even though the micromechanisms of failure were different. The behavior was similar to that of alumina, but the behavior in the critical region near to the equibiaxial state had not been determined with sufficient confidence.
