Popis: The conceptual design of a 6.5 m long superconducting solenoid with 0.4 m inner diameter has been made at PSI. The so called (π - μ)-Converter (PMC) will be coupled to the existing superconducting solenoid SINDRUM II to achieve high muon fluxes in the latter. Both solenoids must have the same nominal magnetic induction of 1.5 T. Stringent homogeneity conditions of the magnetic field must be achieved in the PMC to produce the required beam purity and intensity. A special coil design was chosen to allow operation of the PMC either connected to SINDRUM II or as a stand alone magnet. The magnetic and mechanical connection of the solenoids presented a special challenge. The winding will be indirectly cooled with supercritical helium in forced-flow mode. The paper describes the conceptual design and the results of two preliminary design studies.
