Summary Acute ammonia inhalation is a serious and mainly occupational intoxication. Epidemiological data are scarce regarding the incidence and mortality of these accidents. We report one fatal case and review 19 cases published since 1980. Mortality from acute ammonia inhalation reaches 30% and is related to severe lung injury. Cutaneous burns, attesting exposure to a high concentration of ammonia, is a relevant indicator of severe respiratory damage and poor outcome. Survivors may suffer from chronic lung function impairment and ocular sequelae. Therapy hinges on prevention, first-aid, optimum respiratory support and specialized management of eye and skin burns. Corticosteroid and initial antibiotic therapy in the case of acute respiratory distress syndrome need to be evaluated. |
