As to the functional role of pituicytes there are two main opinions. Some workers assume they play the same role as glia cells in the central nervous system, that is a supportive, especially trophic, function (Hartmann, 1958; Fujita and Hartmann, 1961; Polenov and Belenkii, 1964). Others propose that pituicytes have a special function related to neurosecretory activity (Ortmann, 1951; Kurosumi, 1964). The fact that, after transection of the pituitary stalk, pituicytes are able to phagocytize NSM (Sterba and Bruckner, 1967, 1969; Dellmann and Owsley, 1969) suggests that also in the intact animal a process of degradation may take place. |
