Popis: This chapter deals with the origins and development of the European Union’s (EU) promotion of regional integration as a way to transform regional conflicts. An overview over the EU polices of conflict transformation and the use of pathways of influence towards the Asian, Latin American, African and MENA regions show how EU policy-makers have adapted their perceptions and policy approaches to regional conditions and lessons learnt in the past. While the idea of reaching regional stability by promoting integration abroad continues to guide the EU approach, pragmatism and modesty increasingly determine the EU’s agenda. This has led towards an approach which relies on issue-specific economic incentives, soft forms of experience-sharing as well as on non-provocative approaches based on partnership and local ownership.
