Popis: Under certain conditions of gas pressure and laser power, compressed argon backscatters an important fraction of the light from a Q -switched ruby laser. The frequency of the scattered light is shifted very slightly towards the anti-Stokes side by approximately the half-width of the laser line. This radiation has the characteristics of stimulated scattering; i.e. threshold, directivity and narrowing of the light pulse. The emission occurs during breakdown for densities below 200 amagat, but appears before the breakdown for densities above 200 amagat. A similar phenomenon, but with a much weaker intensity, is observed in compressed helium. It is suggested that these effects result from stimulated Rayleigh scattering.
