Popis: The three works under review represent the first three volumes in the Canterbury Series of Bibliographies, Catalogues and Source Documents in Music, the aim of which is to “document diverse aspects of the musical heritage of the Canterbury province” in New Zealand. The first volume is Selected Source Readings on Musical Activity in the Canterbury Settlement, edited by Brian W. Pritchard. Newspapers provide a valuable insight into the history of our past, especially for matters of cultural concern and as Pritchard describes them, “central forums for the propagation and exchange of ideas and attitudes”. His small volume uses newspapers as a source for material to cover “aspects of music making in which attitudes, philosophies and ideals from the homeland [England] have most clearly directed and influenced the colonial situation”.
