Popis: | The food regulatory and enforcement system in Sri Lanka operates through a primary Food Act operated by the Ministry of Health with guidance of a Food Advisory Committee representing most sectors of the food industry in the public and private sectors. There are several secondary Acts meeting the interests of specific product sectors and export markets. The national food control system relies heavily on end-product testing using a network of inspectors in the country. The system needs much input in quantity and quality to keep up with global trends in food safety. Low commitment for preventive controls through Food Safety Management Systems and lack of risk-based assessment are major drawbacks in the system. There is a proposal currently under consideration to improve the food regulatory and enforcement system developed by Food and Agriculture Organization. |
