By normal mode analysis a novel picture of the relaxation process of charge transfer in C 60 is discovered. It is found that after one electron is transferred to C 60 , only a few normal modes with even parity can be invoked. A Jahn-Teller (J-T) theorem predicts that only the A g and H g modes are J-T active, while our results show that the A g mode exchanges energy with the system nearly harmonically, and the H g mode dominates the relaxation process. This can be understood from their explicit eigenvectors. Implications for mode-selective chemistry and biological processes are discussed. |
