Background: The use of heated tobacco products (HTPs) has increased in Japan since 2014. Their health impact and usefulness for smoking cessation is not well-known. This study aimed to investigate the impact of HTPs use on a smoking cessation support program. Methods: This prospective study included tobacco users at their workplace in Japan. They voluntarily participated in comprehensive smoking cessation support programs, including counseling and pharmacological support, from November 2018 to April 2019. Data were obtained using questionnaires regarding HTPs and lifestyle, COPD assessment test, Tobacco Dependence Screener, and Patient Health Questionnaire. The primary outcome was the proportion of successful quitters in July 2019, that were defined as those who stopped using all kinds of nicotine-containing tobacco products. The association between successful quitting and HTPs use was assessed by Fisher’s exact test and logistic regression analysis adjusted with an inverse probability weighting (IPW) analysis, estimated by a propensity score. Results: Complete data were obtained from 160 tobacco users, of whom 64 (40%) were HTPs users. After comprehensive smoking cessation program, 46 (29%) were successful quitters. Smoking cessation succeeded at the rate of 25 % in HTP users and 31% in non-HTPs users. (p=0.48). A logistic regression analysis adjusted with IPW showed a negative association between HTPs use and successful quitting (odds ratio, 0.54; 95% confidence intervals, 0.32-0.91, p=0.021). Conclusions: This study showed negative impact of HTPs use on successful smoking cessation in a comprehensive support program. |
