Popis: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the scallops of Mexico. Scallops are an important fishery and under intensive exploitation in Mexico. Pectinids are among the most attractive of all bivalves, both in shape and colors, and they are used as the emblem of the shield of the State of Baja California Sur. Scallops inhabit only shallow tropical and subtropical Eastern Pacific waters, including the Gulf of California. The commercial fishing area for each species shows the geographic distribution of fishing and aquaculture. The Argopecten ventricosus species is a solid medium to large shell, very inflated form, with both valves convex, sturdy shells, strongly ribbed with about 21 ribs, anterior and posterior ears about equal in size, raised concentric growth lines in spaces between ribs. Spontaneous natural spawning occurs throughout the year, indicating there are at least some ripe individuals in the population at all times. The influence of food, biochemical composition, and abundance of particles also must be considered. The most important fished stocks of A. ventricosus and E. vogdesi are along the coast of the Baja California Peninsula - notably along the Pacific coast.
