Two studies investigated the influence of prior experience with free-recall learning upon subsequent learning of another list. In Experiment I first lists contained elements from the same conceptual categories as those in the final lists; but individual elements were always different. The first lists varied in the degree to which their organization was comparable to the organization in the final list. The results supported the notion that first which lead to memorial organization similar to that appropriate for second-list learning enhance final-list learning. The hypothesis that enhanced final-list recall was due to the S s' use of rules of organization which are independent of the exact words and categories in the two lists was not supported in Experiment II. |
